80th anniversary of V-E Day in Europe: American Battle Monuments Commission honors the sacrifices of World War II U.S. service members 

On May 8, 2025, nations across Europe will mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, commemorating the Allied victory over Nazi Germany in World War II. That day honors the immense sacrifices made by service members, civilians and nations that contributed to the defeat of fascism.  

As part of the observance, American Battle Monuments Commission plays an important role in remembering the American service members who fought and died during that war. With 13 World War II cemeteries in Europe, ABMC preserves the memory of the Americans who lost their lives in service to their country during that conflict. 

Commemorating V-E Day in Europe 

V-E Day in Europe represents the culmination of extraordinary bravery and sacrifice by countless individuals, and it is important for ABMC to continue preserving the memory of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. ABMC cemeteries and memorials across Europe stand as lasting tributes to those who gave everything for the peace and freedom we enjoy today.  

Across Europe, some ABMC World War II cemeteries will host ceremonies to reflect and honor the men and women who fought for liberty during World War II. Visitors are welcome to come and pay their respects on that special day. These ceremonies provide an opportunity for both veterans and new generations to reflect on the meaning of peace and the importance of remembering those who served. 

ABMC educational programs and outreach 

ABMC’s dedication to preserving history goes beyond just maintaining cemeteries. The commission also provides educational programs and resources for schools, families, and visitors to learn more about the American contributions to the liberation of Europe that led to V-E Day in Europe.  

Through guided tours, virtual experiences, and historical content, ABMC ensures that future generations understand the historical significance of World War II and its lasting impact on Europe and the world. 

The ABMC is dedicated to honoring the service of U.S. military personnel by creating and maintaining memorial sites around the world, offering commemorative services, and educating future generations about the sacrifices made by those who served. ABMC operates 26 cemeteries and 31 memorials across 17 countries, preserving the memory of the fallen and educating the public on the importance of their service.
